CHILDREN’S BOOK A COW AND A BUTTERFLY
This coming of age book illustrates the strength it takes to stay and the strength it takes to spread our wings. Together, Cici and Kadee, experience growing pains and excitement as they anticipate life’s next adventure. Because in life… sometimes you’re the dairy cow and sometimes you’re the butterfly.

WHAT
Writing
Influenced by her surroundings and motherhood, author, Melissa McGavock, created an original story about two unlikely friends who experience, together, the strength it takes to stay and the strength it takes to spread our wings. The intended audience leans female, yet is varied and widespread with content that appeals to children ages 3+, young adult, and upward to mid-life.
Illustration
An exploration in the study of line, these illustrations are inspired by wire art and organic patterns. The color pallette is both natural and bold, each page a beautiful representation of nature’s abundance. The style is extended with impressions of unnatural patterns, one’s you may find in a quilt or an interior designer’s workspace. This look seemlessly ties together the patterns we find in life and in nature.
Research
Extensive research was achieved upon the onset of this project. Considering their personal experience and the challenge of writing a story that appeals to such a wide audience, successful investigation inspired the narrative. As well, the content and artwork is copywrited and registered with the Library of Congress.

Crowdfunding
Together with a Crowdfunding Event and Social Media Marketing, A Cow and a Butterfly was successfully funded through Kickstarter with over 40 backers that pledged $4000+. The team was able to publish and print 300 hardbound books, as well as posters, and character trading cards that were were gifted to backers and are still for sale on the website.
