As we prepare to close this difficult and insightful year, instead of a New Year’s resolution, consider a Word of the Year. It’s a simple step in the right direction towards realizing your goals and creating positive change. Even something simple, like a word, is always in the back of your mind. You’re likely to think about it, perhaps even without realizing it.

A Word of the Year has the potential to effect behavior. And since actions speak louder than words, make it your goal to pace yourself and your work culture with a Word that embraces your mission wholeheartedly.

This is a gentle, yet constant reminder of your focus – something business owners and creative entrepreneurs have to dial in regularly. At Trevo, one of our core values is to, “Work on it, not just in it…” meaning, if you lose time and focus getting wrapped up in every daily task and deadline, you tend to lose sight of the task at hand, you.

The first step to finding balance and manifesting your desires is awareness and intention. A Word of the Year is a simple practice that both actively and passively encourages recognizable change. Apply it to your mission statement, paste it across your office walls, add it to your rally cry for the marketing campaigns that year. Plunge your Word into all that you do. Write about it. Talk about it. Make it a task for every agenda, check it off your list for every project you approach. Make it so your Word inspires and connects you.

Popular buzzwords for small businesses are “Balance,” “Grow,” Focus,” and “Simplify.” You can go that route and start out easy, or you can choose something that really excites you. My Word of the Year is “Nike.” Most recall the athletic brand, however, Nike has a deeper meaning for me as an art historian, a woman, and a business owner.

On the surface, I do love the Nike athletic brand and all that it stands for. The swoosh “symbolises the sound of speed, movement, power and motivation,” all encouraging words for an entrepreneur excited about starting out. However, when I think of Nike, I recall, in my mind, the 18ft marble sculpture of a winged woman that stands in the Louvre.

This ancient artwork, titled the “Winged Victory of Samothrace,” is thousands of years old, it was created during the Hellenistic period in Greece sometime 300 BCE. “Nike,” the Greek Goddess of Victory is draped in cloth that dramatically catches every inch of her powerful figure moving forward. This remarkable depiction of strength and movement encompasses all that I want to be in life and in work, as a business owner, as a mother, and as a wife. I will stand up. I will stand strong, and I will overcome the challenges this year has brought. More importantly, I will move forward and find solidarity with my peers and myself.

I’ll also gift myself some Nike kicks to commemorate this year and to honor the will to advance now and next year, and the year after that.

I hope this article inspires you to think about your Word of the Year and see where it takes you. Get creative, even ballsy, it doesn’t have to make sense to everybody. Do it for you. “Just do it.”
